What Do You See in Rural Texas Water?

The Texas Rural Water Foundation (TRWF) and Texas Rural Water Association (TRWA) are proud to support the utilities that provide rural Texas’ drinking water and wastewater services. Our unique programs address utilities’ widespread needs, from training to program development to funding assistance and emergency response. As part of our continuous efforts to shine a spotlight on the past, present and future of rural water, we need your help.

Ask yourself: what do you see when you look at the utility responsible for your drinking water and/or wastewater treatment? Who are the people working to provide these services to rural Texas, and how do they do it? Do you have any historical images representing how far we have come from the days of hand pumps and buckets?

PH2OTOSTREAM Photo Contest

We are proud to announce the second annual PH2OTOSTREAM photo will be accepting entries between September 1, 2017 and January 15, 2018! PH2OTOSTREAM is our response to a need for images from, and for, rural Texas—a way to share the contributions of rural Texas water and wastewater systems with the greater public. This photography contest will provide both TRWF and TRWA with images to use freely throughout all communications and promotions.

Categories include:

Rural Texas Water: A general category for images representing the rural water and wastewater utility industry

Water Infrastructure: Images of the technology that drives water utilities

Utility Operators in Action: Images depicting utility personnel working in the field

Rural Water History: Images that provide a pictorial history of rural water. If you have images of your system’s groundbreaking, your original board, historically significant artifacts, etc., we encourage you to scan your images and send them in!

Contestants agree to release their photographs for use by TRWF/TRWA, and the winning contestants in each category will receive prizes.

Use of entered photos

All entered photos may be featured on training and program materials, website and social media of both TRWF and TRWA.

Prizes

  • Each category winner will receive a cash prize and be spotlighted in Quench, TRWA’s magazine.

  •  The Grand Prize winner will be selected from the category winners, and in addition to their cash prize will receive a matted and framed print of their photo.

  • A category winner in each of the four categories will receive $50.

Finalists will receive a letter of recognition

*Please note: Contestants are encouraged to submit in all four categories; however, only one first place prize will be granted to each entrant.

Eligibility and other considerations

  • All photos must be taken in Texas.
  • Contestants may enter multiple submissions in and across categories; however, they will be eligible to win only one first place prize.
  • Previously published material for which non-exclusive rights were granted may be entered as long as you still retain full rights to the photo.
  • Photos must be provided digitally and in a high resolution format of at least 300 dpi.

Photo release agreement

Each entered image must be accompanied by a signed Photo Contest Release and Entry Form, including a Model Release for each recognizable person in the image. All accepted photos may be used in various media formats for an unlimited amount of time and at no cost to TRWF or TRWA, with byline where possible.

Judging

Entries will be posted on the TRWA and TRWF Facebook pages and winners will be chosen by popular vote. In the instance of a tie, the photos will be judged anonymously by TRWF/TRWA staff and volunteers according to the following criteria. Across each category, judges will consider:

Originality

Technical excellence

Composition

Representative of the category in which the photo is entered

Potential to effectively represent and communicate the values and achievements of TRWF and TRWA

Ability to evoke emotion and/or tell a story

Contest entrants agree to abide by all the terms set forth herein and by the decisions made by the judges. Judges’ decisions are final.

Alteration

In general, we are looking for images that look as natural as possible. Photos that have been digitally altered to enhance the image without drastically changing the image’s style are acceptable and eligible for submission; e.g., adjustments to color, contrast, brightness and sharpening; removal of dust and scratches; cropping, and use of HDR. However, we discourage the use of photo composites, digital filters and other effects which drastically alter the scene from its original state.

Deadline, Format and Submission of Entries

All entry packages must be received by January 15, 2018. Winners will be notified in mid-February, and highlighted in the March/April 2018 Quench magazine.

Each entry package should include:

  • Signed Model Release for every recognizable person in the photo, if applicable (included on back of Photo Contest Release and Entry Form)
  • Image of at least 300 dpi

Entries will be accepted in digital format only. Files less than 10 MB total may be submitted by e-mail to editor@trwa.org. Entries greater than 10 MB can be emailed via Dropbox link. Otherwise, they must be submitted by mail, in digital format (disk or flash drive), accompanied by printed and signed Photo Contest Release and Entry Form and Signed Model Release, to:
